Last notice to attend session for candidates
Anyone interested in becoming a councillor can attend a final session in the region next week - with free transport from Horsham laid on by Horsham Rural City Council.
The Municipal Association of Victoria is running a “Stand for Council” session at Nhill Memorial Community Centre, 77-79 Nelson Street, from 6.30pm-8.30pm on Wednesday August 14.
Prospective candidates will be offered information about the role and purpose of local government, the responsibilities and expectations of a councillor, and the electoral process.
In-person check-in is from 6pm-6:30pm. Horsham Rural City Council will provide free travel for Horsham and district residents.

Candidates are not obliged to attend a Municipal Association of Victoria session, but must register for official one-hour training. For details visit https://www.localgovernment.vic.gov.au/council-governance/candidate-training
Nominations for council open on September 9 and close on September 17, and elections are on Saturday October 26.
Under the Local Government Act 2020, the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) conducts the election process on behalf of councils.
