Patrons at Warracknabeal’s Royal Mail Hotel gathered on Friday night for a last hoorah, before publican Simon Todd (centre) called last drinks for the last time.
The hotel proprietor made the shock announcement last week on social media, that the hotel was to close on Friday, but not offering reasons for the closure.
A large group of patrons gathered at the hotel showing their support for the Todd family on their last official day of trading, where some tears were shed when the realisation finally struck them that they were losing their favourite watering hole.
Warracknabeal is still served by the Creekside Hotel and the Palace Hotel after being re-opened some years ago. The Warrack Hotel is still in the process of being renovated into a bed and breakfast type facility over the last two years. At this stage it is still unclear what the future for the Royal Mail Hotel holds after the freehold was sold by former owner Carol Wall to a Melbourne investor.
“It’s not only a massive loss for ourselves, but also for the community, “ Mr Todd said, “We’ve put thousands back into the community through our fund raising, and we’ve always ensured the hotel was a ‘safe place’ for our clientele.”
“This hotel was our dream and it is a shame this has happened. I can’t talk about what has happened due to legal reasons, but we love the Warracknabeal community and its people.”
“We intend to stay in Warracknabeal and are currently looking for a home, so if anyone has a home available to rent, we’d love to hear from them as soon as possible,” Mr Todd said.
