Lana Horman named 2025 dux
Lana Horman has been named dux of Hopetoun P-12 College after achieving an ATAR of 86.15 in the 2025 VCE results.
The announcement came as a surprise to her, as she did not expect to top the class.
“I was a bit shocked about it, as I wasn’t expecting it,” she said.
“I thought it was going to go to one of my friends.
She found out the news at home when her teacher, Miss Lachlan, called to let her know she was dux.
“I was at home, and I think my parents were a bit shocked too, to be honest,” she said.
Lana said her family shared the moment despite being at work.
“My sister actually called me at the same time as Miss Lachlan, and then I called Mum and Dad,” she said.
Reflecting on her VCE journey, Lana said the highlight was not just academic success.
“Probably just hanging out with my friends and the last memories that we’ve made together,” she said.
She acknowledged that the year was not without challenges.
“My motivation definitely went down at times, but you’ve just got to push through, I guess, and hope for the best,” she said.
She credited strong support from both home and school for helping her stay on track.
“Staff, particularly Miss Lachlan, and my mum were probably my biggest motivation,” she said.
Outside the classroom, Lana enjoys creative pursuits and taking time to unwind.
“I like to listen to music, just arts and crafts,” she said,
She previously played netball, but took a break this year.
Looking ahead, Lana is considering a gap year but has also applied for university, with Ballarat her first preference to study nursing at ACU.
“It’s just something I think I might enjoy, perhaps, in the future,” she said.
Lana encouraged younger students to stay committed to their studies and thanked the wider community for its support.
“Just try your best. It’s a long ride, it’s a whole two years, so just put in the best effort you can,” she said.
“And to the Hopetoun community, just thank you for all the support.”
