Kaniva too strong for Natimuk
Kaniva Leeor United continued their push in the men’s senior football finals race with a dominant win over Natimuk United on Saturday in round 12 of the Horsham District Football Netball League.
Jacob Eats led the way for the Cougars with nine goals, as Kaniva Leeor United scored 15.19 (109) to Natimuk’s 2.10 (22).
Playing at Natimuk, the visitors used a strong wind to their advantage, establishing a large 51-2 lead at the first break.
Dominant middle quarters from Kaniva saw them extend their lead to 62 and 83 points at the half-time and third-quarter breaks, respectively, restricting Natimuk from any chance to challenge for the win.
For Kaniva Leeor, Tyler Roos and Josh Clayton were the best players in a full-team effort while Jesse Taylor and Kaiden Sudholz stood out for the losing side.
Along with nine goals for Jacob Eats, brother Lochie kicked three for Kaniva, while Jack Bellinger and Samuel Vella scored Natimuk’s two goals.
Jonno Hicks, coach of Kaniva Leeor, said the team’s second quarter playing against the wind helped secure the win.
“There was obviously a big breeze that was a real spot of bother,” Hicks said.
“We were lucky to start with it and make good of it.
“The second quarter is what set the game up for us with the way we ran and moved the ball.
“We defended really well in the second-quarter breeze and played smartly by running the ball through the wind and spotting up with short kicks.
Asked about Jacob Eats’ nine goals, Hicks commended the co-coach for building the side’s lead early in the game.
“He (Jacob Eats) had a really big day – probably had about 18 shots at goal,” Hicks said.
“He’s providing a real focus for us and especially early really helped set us up in that first quarter.”
Hicks also praised midseason recruits Tyler Roos and Josh Clayton, two of the side’s best in the victory.
“Tyler Roos and Josh Clayton coming on board mid-season have made a huge impact for the group,” Hicks said.
“They really lead on the field and help set their guys up too.
“It’s been pretty exciting to see what they can do.”
The result lifts Kaniva Leeor to six wins for the season, one game behind Laharum and the Swifts.
