Kaniva Op Shop turned one
The Kaniva Op Shop marked its first birthday on Thursday, June 5, celebrating a year of community support, volunteer dedication and affordable clothing services for the town and beyond.
Born out of the community’s concern following the closure of the Salvation Army store, the initiative quickly gathered momentum through discussions among Kaniva Community Church, LINK Neighbourhood House, the West Wimmera Shire Council and local residents.
Within weeks, the Op Shop and a revitalised Food Bank service were launched under a shared community vision.
“We’ve had a wonderful experience for the first year and the community’s just been so supportive all the way,” said manager Kerryn Dyer.
“It’s just been a completely community-supported project.”
The shop, open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm, is run by a team of six managers and nearly 30 volunteers, including those who support the Food Bank.
Over the past 12 months, the shop has performed well enough to cover its operating expenses and contribute to the community, including a donation of $2500 to LINK Neighbourhood House and the Food Bank.
The funds are used to sustain services and support broader ministry work.
Ms Dyer said most of the shop’s stock is donated.
“It’s mostly clothing and shoes, accessories, and some bric-brac,” she said.
“The most saleable items are women’s and children’s clothing.”
The Op Shop’s impact has extended beyond its retail operations.
Health consultations with West Wimmera Health Service now run monthly from the shop, and volunteers send excess stock to remote Australian op shops that struggle to source items.
Locals can support this initiative by purchasing a $23.35 5kg post pack from the Kaniva Post Office, which is passed on to the shop.
“We just really want to thank the community for all their support in every way,” Ms Dyer said.
“I hope that we can continue to provide this service.”
The Op Shop welcomes new volunteers and remains a bustling hub for locals and travellers alike.
