Kalkee win third straight
Kalkee have continued its rise up the ladder after securing a strong win over Edenhope Apsley on Saturday in round 10 of the Horsham District Football Netball League.
The final score was Kalkee 15.10 (100) to Edenhope Apsley 3.8 (26).
As in their other recent wins, Kalkee came out strongly in the opening quarter, racing out to a 33-3 lead at quarter-time, before finishing the half up 64-16.
The Saints were able to slow down Kalkee’s scoring in the second half, but Kalkee ran out with a 74-point win.
Andy Devereaux, coach of Kalkee, said he was happy to register another win and was particularly pleased with the side’s full-game effort.
“I think the boys definitely attacked the game exactly how I wanted them to,” Devereaux said.
“We definitely fly on when we're up and going, and we definitely can play the quality we want to play – it's just sustaining it.
“But the four quarters yesterday was probably our first real complete four-quarter effort, which is really pleasing from a coaching standpoint.”
For Kalkee, Karl Campbell and Matt Nield were among the best players, while Boyd Packer and Dale Smith impressed for Edenhope.
Luke Byrne and Deacan Campbell led Kalkee in goals with three each, while Angus Wood, Jason Eagle and Josh La Rocca kicked the Saints’ three goals.
Devereaux spoke highly of Deacan Campbell’s return to the team after a preseason injury.
“It was nice to get Deacan Campbell back,” Devereaux said.
“He was someone who was really handy for us the last couple of years.
“He's a young fella who's been developing and he had a bit of a serious injury in the offseason so it's really pleasing to see him back out and playing some good footy.”
Asked about the side’s impressive starts in recent weeks, Devereaux acknowledged the forward group had taken advantage of their impressive midfield.
“Our midfield’s been one of our strengths and has been for a while,” Devereaux said.
“We probably haven't really been able to put the score on the board in the forward 50 earlier in the season but we're finally getting a really good culmination of the forward six.
“I think that's paying dividends really early in games, just because we've just got that ability to hit multiple targets.
“We don't really have the person who's going to kick 10 goals but we do have multiple options who are good in front of the sticks, which has been nice.”
