Kalkee knock out reigning premiers
A massive second half from Kalkee saw them knock out the reigning premiers, Edenhope Apsley, by 16 goals at Pimpinio Recreation Reserve in Sunday's elimination final in the Horsham District Football Netball League.
The game was tight early, with neither team giving an inch. Kalkee took a one-goal lead into quarter-time. The second quarter was equally as tough as the first, with the Saints able to level the scores at half-time.
In the third quarter, Kalkee started to get on top, with a massive 15-goal to five-quarter lead, taking a 10-goal lead into the last break.
Despite the Saints fighting back, the Kees held firm, winning 52-36.
Jarrah Martin and Jenna Bywaters scored 30 and 22 goals, respectively, for Kalkee, with Molly Lakin and Georgia Schultz being outstanding as their best players.
Lavinia Fox scored 20 goals for the Saints, with Tahlia Sailor scoring 14 goals and Morgan Coventry being their best player.
Kees coach Paula Wiedermann said it was a hard-fought match.
"It was up and down in the first half, and I think in the third quarter, we just capitalised on the turnovers, and we kept everyone on the court and let the girl's fitness come through," Wiedermann said.
"In the end, we just came away with it, and the girls can be proud because every one of them played well. It was a team effort.
"Jarrah Martin was a standout in goals and was consistent, moved well and most the time she had two players and dominated."
"The defence with Penny Fisher and Lotus Martin was solid in the second half, and they clicked and worked out what they needed to do."
"All in all, it was a massive effort, and we look forward to next week's match."
