Kalkee aim for second win

Kalkee will be looking to build momentum when they host Natimuk this Saturday in round nine of the Horsham District Football Netball League.

Kalkee return from the break after recording their first win of the season, a

106-86 victory over Rupanyup.

They go against a youthful Natimuk unit, who are currently seventh on the league ladder with a 3-4 record.

Andy Devereaux, coach of Kalkee, believes the side can accumulate some wins after a tough start to the season.

“We’ve obviously had a pretty tough draw,” Devereaux said.

“I think us and Laharum have probably had two of the harder draws of the competition so far.

“We’re looking to build some confidence, get some wins on the board, and show that the style of footy that we've been playing and got close with a number of games.

Devereaux is mindful of the young and improving Natimuk side, and key players they will look out for on Saturday.

“I think it's going to be a very intriguing matchup,” Devereaux said.

“A few of their players have come from Horsham Saints and they are talented young guys that can do anything on their day.

“I know Billy (William) Taylor's definitely an up-and-coming player of the region, so he's definitely one that we sort of need to be mindful of on the weekend, as well as guys like Drew Harris and AJ Lupton.”

Going forward, the Kalkee coach intends to keep to the team’s structures, acknowledging fitness as a key factor contributing to their less-than-ideal start.

“Had a bit of reflection over the break and the structures that we have and are working on, and it’s probably that we didn’t quite have the fitness base to start the season,” Devereaux said.

“We want to play a high-tempo style of footy, and it’s worked well against some quality teams for about a half, but fitness has let us down.

“I think we will continue to build our base, and that comes naturally with the more footy you play throughout the season.”
