Ismay to lead new council as mayor
Councillor Ron Ismay was elected mayor of Hindmarsh Shire Council for the next 12 months, with newly elected councillor Chan Uoy stepping into the role of deputy mayor for the Council at the annual statutory meeting held last Wednesday.
Residents of the Hindmarsh Shire will see five new councillors, Chan Uoy, Rosie Barker, James Barry, Tony Clark and Roger Aitken, alongside veteran councillor Ron Ismay.
Cr's Barker, Ismay and Uoy were nominated for the role of mayor, which was given to Cr Ismay, who received four votes.
“Thank you to those around the table who supported this decision and I pay tribute to the other two councillors who were nominated, I believe they will be quite capable taking on this role in the future," Cr Ismay said.
"I look forward to working with everyone. I believe we need to change, and our CEO as Cr Barker said, is certainly the one to do so."
The first round of voting for the role of deputy mayor was split, with each of the three nominated councillors, Barker, Uoy and Aitken, receiving two votes.
The voting was taken to 'the lot' which saw each councillor draw a card to narrow down voting.
"Whoever draws the defeated card is out," CEO Monica Revell said.
Cr Aitken drew the defeated card, leaving him out of the running.
Cr Barker received two votes, with Cr Uoy receiving a total of four.
“I really do feel lucky to be here. The fact the community voted me in here has touched me," Cr Uoy said.
"I have been very passionate and I will continue to do that."
During the meeting, delegates were also appointed to council advisory committees, community asset committees and external organisations.
