In step for cancer run

Cancer Council Victoria's Relay for Life fundraising event is returning to Horsham on Friday October 18 and organisers are encouraging the community to take part.

The event celebrates cancer survivors, remembers loved ones and fights back against cancer.

Around 133 people are diagnosed with cancer in the greater Horsham region each year, and Relay For Life raises funds for vital research, prevention and support services.

Participating teams will complete laps around a track or oval to signify that every day we’re making strides towards a cancer-free future.

On average, more than 134,000 participants take part in Relay For Life events nationally, raising about $14 million each year.

People can participate by being a Relay for Life team leader, joining a team, becoming a member of a local committee or volunteering.

Horsham chair Kingsley Dalgleish has been involved with Relay for Life for about 15 years and has said the event brought a special atmosphere.

“It’s about celebrating but also remembering, especially during the candlelit vigil and those first laps around the track for survivors and carers,” he said.

Since the Horsham event beginning in 2001, around $2 million has been raised for Cancer Council Victoria.

"Cancer Council Victoria helps support people impacted by cancer across the state, including here in Horsham,” Mr Dalgleish said.

Cancer Council Victoria’s community giving manager Renee Gani said Relay for Life events were a chance for whole communities to unite for a common cause.

“Relay for Life is such a beloved, unique event and allows people to make a difference in the communities,” she said.

“With one in two Victorians diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, cancer affects all of us. Everyone has a reason to get involved.

“We’re thrilled to see this special event back again and can’t wait to see the Horsham community come together again.”

Horsham Relay for Life will be held at Coughlin Park.
