Well, here we are again in the middle of the school term holidays.
Like so many others, my family has taken the opportunity to travel, escaping the chilly mornings of Rainbow for the relative warmth of Queensland. Not quite the Darwin climate that I am more accustomed to, but not bad, nevertheless.
During my years working in the Northern Territory, travelling was something that one became very accustomed to.
From where we lived in Maningrida, the nearest “real” town was Jabiru, which, depending upon the condition of the road, could be anywhere from three to seven hours drive away.
To travel into Darwin, allow at least an entire day.
I recently read an interesting article entitled “Nine Reasons why Travelling is Good for the Christian Soul”, and would like to share some of it.
The first reason was, travelling teaches us about God's creativity. It shows us new places, sceneries, cultures and other things that reveal the wonderful nature of God's creation.
The second was, it forces us to change our routines and to get out of our comfort zones, teaching us to be resourceful and adaptable, and often reminding us of the necessity of always putting our trust in God, especially during times and situations of uncertainty.
Third, travelling forces us to re-evaluate our need for material goods through the necessity of packing only what we need, and surviving on limited resources for a time.
Fourth, travelling reminds us of God's gifts to us, and inspires us to use our own talents and abilities for the benefit of all, both while away and at home.
Fifth, travelling offers the opportunity to still our minds, to stop and meditate upon God’s word and the many blessings that he has given to us.
Sixth, travelling teaches us to have a greater appreciation for those whom we have at home, inspiring us to be better husbands, wives, fathers, mothers or whatever else we may be.
Seventh, travelling can strengthen our commitment to Christ as it often takes extra effort to maintain our relationship with Him when we are away from our usual routines and resources.
Eighth, travelling gives us opportunities to meet new people, offering opportunities to tell others about Christ. While we may not be on a mission trip, we should nevertheless always be alert to the opportunities that God may place before us.
Ninth, travelling, quite simply, is fun. It reinforces the scriptural teaching that our faith is to be one of joy and happiness, and opens our eyes to new ways and opportunities of partaking of the richness of the Christian life.
In the Bible book of Isaiah, God gave the prophet Isaiah these words which should easily resonate with all of us here in Australia:
"The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail."
