If you wash your car, it will rain; the unspoken rule of car washing
With a lack of rain for the crops, I feel we all need to play our part.
Is car washing a lost art?
Before I had the girls, I used to park my little car on the front lawn every weekend, break out the bucket of bubbles and wash my precious vehicle.
Of course, as our family grew, so did the size of the family car. I ended up with a seven-seater which I couldn't reach over the roof of, so it's lucky drive through car washes came in.
Each of my three daughters has bought her own little car along the way, making the purchase with funds earned in a part-time job.
Over the years we've filled a lot of fuel tanks, but I haven't seen a huge amount of car washing on the front lawn.
The training was delivered, the skills are there, but these young women we raised don't seem to be rushing into it.
Recently, my baby girl completed her first thorough car wash, leaving her beloved white hatchback blindingly sparkly.
It was impressive. She was proud. We circled her means of transport in admiration. I could hear violins playing.
It rained immediately of course. The state of the roads was abysmal. Her car was dirty again.
I was forced to explain the unspoken car washing rule: if you wash your car, it will rain.
Two months of dry weather ensued before we happened to be in my vehicle together after a particularly accurate magpie had splashed the whole side of my car with white.
I needed to run through the car wash to get off a couple of months of dust and the new poo.
We chatted as the car became shiny again and I could see clearly through both the front and back windows.
We rolled out of that car wash, drip dried on our way to the bakery, popped into the car after spinning through the supermarket, and then on our way back home, the intermittent wipers came on automatically - it had started to rain.
My youngest daughter is now completely cognizant of the link between car washing and the weather, however, we need the whole community to be on board.
