Horsham woman fined almost $2000 for dumping rubbish near Wimmera River
Horsham woman fined, faces clean up costs for dumped rubbish.
A Horsham woman has been fined nearly $2000 and ordered to pay additional clean-up costs after being caught dumping rubbish on the banks of the Wimmera River.
The 41-year-old woman received a $1976 infringement under the EPA Act Section 115(4) and would also be responsible for $849 in clean-up expenses, bringing the total fines to $2825.
A Horsham Rural City Council spokesperson highlighted that the dumping occurred near the Riverside Road bridge, a known hotspot for illegal waste disposal.
"Illegal dumping of litter costs the Horsham Rural City Council tens of thousands of dollars each year, a financial burden ultimately borne by ratepayers," the spokesperson said.
"Unfortunately, much of the rubbish ends up in our waterways."
The spokesperson noted that general waste disposal at transfer stations starts at $19, with many items eligible for free recycling.
