Horsham golfers acknowledge Black Saturday bushfires with Ashes Trophy event
2025 marks the 15th anniversary of the Black Saturday bushfires.
The Horsham Golf Club's women's golfers acknowledged the Black Saturday bushfires with the Ashes Trophy on Thursday, February 6.
The 2025 event marks the 15th year that the Three-Ball Stableford event has been held in commemoration of the bushfires of February 7, 2009, when many trees along the course were lost and the clubhouse was destroyed.
Players were very mindful of the many people who are currently suffering due to bushfires in the region.
The highly prized trophy awarded to the winning team was hand-crafted by Michael and June Crabtree from the burnt remains of one of the fairway trees.
The scores were close, with the winning team of Helen Burke, Marge Rich and Robyn Watts winning with 48 points on a countback from Yvonne Bullough, Joyce Mills and Lil Mayer.
In third place was Louise Nield, Mary-Anne Burdett and Carolyn Purvis with 47 points.
Nearest the pin winner of the second hole was Joyce Mills, on the eighth was Lisa Jakobi, on the 11th was Marge Rich and on the 13th was Trudy Parker.
The event was sponsored by Harcourts Real Estate.
