The two-hectare site is expected to operate for between four and six weeks, providing essential facilities including 250 tents, five large marquees, a commercial kitchen, shower and toilet blocks, and designated parking for fire trucks and support vehicles.

CFA basecamp manager Barbara Bednarek emphasised the importance of the location, saying that having a centralised hub ensured firefighters could rest properly after their gruelling 12-to-14-hour shifts.

“This place is very important for the firefighters as we are sort of close enough for them to come back so they are not driving for hours on top,” Ms Bednarek said.

“They're already working really hard out in the field.

“We're trying to keep everyone safe as the fires in the Grampians and Little Desert are not yet under control.”

Horsham Agricultural Society, which manages the event space, has had to adjust its plans, particularly for its upcoming festival.

Executive officer Andrea Cross acknowledged both the challenges and the opportunities, noting that while space was limited, the presence of emergency crews could bring fresh faces to the events.

“We’re here for the community, and this situation highlights our role as a valuable community asset,” Ms Cross said.

Despite the disruptions, the community is rallying together.

Ms Cross said she hoped that the upcoming 150KM Feast would provide an opportunity to thank the firefighters for their efforts while also supporting the local economy.

With fires still active in the Grampians and surrounding areas, authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant as emergency teams work tirelessly to gain control.
