HORSHAM Hornets men claimed a strong victory over second-placed Mount Gambier Lakers at the Horsham Basketball stadium on Saturday night.
The Hornets claimed an 87-81 point victory to maintain its third placing on the premiership table, holding out its opponent in the final term and maintain a six-point advantage at the final whistle.
A big opening to the match set up victory as the Hornets jumped out of the blocks and lead 20-8 at quarter time before stretching its lead to 16 points at half time.
The Lakers matched the Hornets in the third term and cut the margin to 13 at three quarter before a big challenge in the final term saw them outscore the Hornets 25-18 but left too much to do as the Hornets enjoyed a strong buffer.
Austin McKenzie was strong all game for the Hornets and finished with a game-high 26 points, while Cody Bryan shot 19 and Mitch Martin finished with 16.
Earlier in the night, the Horsham Lady Hornets suffered a 71-56 point loss to the second-placed Lakers.
A strong start had the Hornets leading 19-13 at quarter time before the Lakers hit back in the second quarter to outscore the Hornets 21-11 and enjoy a four-goal buffer at half time.
The Lakers extended their lead to eight by three quarter time before powering away in the final term scoring 19 points to 12.
Emalie Iredell top scored for the Hornets with a game-high 18 points, Olivia Jones, 13, and Imogen Worthy, 10, found their range.
Saturday night’s games were the last games of the regular season with both teams sitting out a bye this weekend before the mens Hornets team prepares for the first round of finals and Lady Hornets prepare for season 2023-24.
