Ray Hewitt, a long serving member of the Historical Centre & Historical Society, was farewelled and his contribution acknowledged during an afternoon tea at the Centre.
Ray joined the Centre when it was purchased by the Warracknabeal Shire, in exchange for the former Mechanics Institute, in the 1970’s.
Along with many other dedicated Warracknabeal residents, Ray has been part of the voluntary committee and has devoted many years since to the Centre which preserves the history of the residents, town and area.
Ray has enjoyed sharing the history behind many of the exhibits in the Centre, which includes the former State Savings Bank as well as the residence behind and above the bank.
President of the Centre, Graeme Massey thanked Ray for his enormous contribution to the Centre and to the preservation of the history of Warracknabeal.
Ray’s daughter, Wendy designed the current brochure advertising the Centre.
Ray thanked the Committee and hopes to still find time to drop in and retain an interest in the Centre.
A regular stream of visitors go through the Historical Centre and are most impressed by the range of furnished rooms and exhibits ranging from old retro food tins to World War One postcards, and an organ from one of the former Lutheran churches at Areegra.
Copies of many family and district histories are donated to the Centre and available for geneology research, which is also a major role of the Centre.
Some state bank uniforms and other small memorabilia were recently donated by the State Bank Retired Officers Club.
The former vault of the bank houses a range of valuable records of former organisations and clubs of the town and district.
The Centre is open weekdays and Sundays from 2pm to 4pm. Contact numbers are displayed at the centre if it is unattended.
