Yarriambiack Shire Council are reaching out to gauge the communities thoughts on a reduction to the speed limits for Murtoa and Rupanyup main streets from 60 kilometres per hour to 50 kilometres per hour.
The change would be applied to Murtoa’s Marma Street, between Lake Street and the Wimmera Highway, with the aim of addressing road safety concerns for all road users, including pedestrians.
Rupanyup’s Cromie Street would see the reduction applied from Gibson Street to the south end of the street, incorporating the Rupanyup Nursing Home and allowing for a particular focus on the safety of elderly residents, as well as other pedestrians and businesses in the town’s centre.
Yarriambiack Shire Council chief executive Tammy Smith said there had already been an overwhelming amount of feedback received from the Rupanyup community regarding the speed limit.
“Council has received feedback regarding these two particular streets, and the concerns for pedestrians crossing these busy freight and tourist routes,” she said.
“This is one way that Council can ensure all road users are safe in our towns, whether they are travelling in cars, trucks or on foot.”
