Green upgrade at Bowls Club
Warracknabeal Golf Bowls Club is rolling out a major resurfacing project to replace its 17-year-old synthetic green, improving playing conditions and attracting new members.
The full resurfacing project is costing about $180,000.
Club president Brian Gunn said the old surface had reached the end of its useful life.
“Synthetic bowl surfaces normally have a lifespan of between 15 to 20 years,” he said.
“Ours was now 17 years old. It was getting very thin and starting to do funny things with bowls, so it was time to get a new one.”
The resurfacing works started on Monday, May 4 and are expected to take about two weeks to complete.
“We started Monday just gone, and they say about two weeks,” he said.
“There are two different working people.
“There’s a foundation mob there now, and then next Monday they will actually come and put the new green down.”
Mr Gunn said the club had funded the project largely through money raised by its bowls members over many years.
“We luckily had two-thirds of the money in our bowls club ourselves, and then the remaining third was lent to us by the golf club side of it,” he said.
Mr Gunn said the club had been preparing for the replacement since the last surface was installed.
The new green is expected to change playing conditions at the club, with Mr Gunn saying it will not play as fast as the previous surface.
“We’re hoping to attract new members with it,” he said.
“It won’t be anywhere near as fast as the one we’ve just finished with, and it will change a lot of conditions out there, but hopefully it’ll attract new members for us.”
Mr Gunn encouraged local bowlers and the wider Warracknabeal community to visit the club once the works are finished.
“Please come and try it out when it’s finished,” he said.
