It was a great weekend for the Morcom family with Hamish playing in Golden Square's Premiership in the Bendigo Football League and Alex returning to the AFLW in style winning the Fujitsu Performer of the Match award against the Fremantle Dockers at Windy Hill.
Golden Square beat Sandhurst in a thriller by a goal and Hamish was a key part of the win in his 174th and last match for the club. In 2024 he will be coaching Huntly in the Heathcote and District Football League.
Then on Sunday, Alex was instrumental down back with 13 disposals and 7 intercept possessions in Essendon's 20 point win.
It was her first game of the year after missing the first three through injury and Alex said she was excited to play again.
“I was so excited to get the opportunity to get back out there. During the week I just tried to hit the track and make sure I got the most out of that, and it came into the game today," she said.
“It was just so good to be back out there with the girls, they really got around me getting back into it and the crowd was incredible."
This was Morcom's first AFLW match at Windy Hill and she said the crowd was electric.
“You could hear the crowd from the stands and that really spurred us on. It was a great four quarters of footy for us,” Morcom said.
“The Bomber fans are incredible. Running out of the race and hearing them behind you is amazing and we really appreciate the support.”
Hamish and Alex's Mum, Carolyn, said she was proud of them and excited about what is to come.
"We are very proud of both of the kids," she said.
"For Alex we were excited when she was selected. She played really well and I am really happy for her."
"She got selected to have another game this weekend against Collingwood at Punt Road which is on Grand Final day so it's very exciting and hope it continues well for her."
Hamish has been loyal at Golden Square for 12 years and it was fitting his last game there was a premiership, making it his 3rd with the club.
"He has been approached by many teams over the years but stayed with Golden Square," she said.
"Last year they thought they were going to win the flag and were knocked out in the preliminary final and he was heartbroken so he came back for another year and got rewarded with the flag."
"We are excited for Hamish now that he is going to join the coaching ranks. He has always wanted to go down the coaching path."
"He has been an assistant coach with Golden Square and coached the Pioneer Girls Under 16's so we are excited for his next step."
