Grants recharge volunteers' batteries
Even a small grant can provide an enormous boost to a community organisation and the people behind it, Wimmera Southern Mallee Development (WSMD) CEO Chris Sounness has told a gathering at Horsham Golf Club.
Mr Sounness, speaking at this year's Murra Warra Wind Farm sustainable community grants presentation, said current figures showed the region could grow by up to 7000 people within 10 years and a vibrant community and vibrant out-of-work activities were essential.
"People will have an eight-hour working day but it's what's available for the rest of the day that often helps decide whether they want to continue to live in the area," he said. "We need to have on offer a whole range of opportunities."
WSMD helped decide successful applicants for the $110,000 in windfarm grants, provided by owner Squadron Energy.
Chris Gulvin of Murra Warra Wind Farm handed out the grants to organisations across the region including Rainbow, Dimboola, Warracknabeal, Natimuk and Horsham.
Club representatives expressing their appreciation, saying their members and volunteers were stretched to the limit and unable to meet the cost of basic repairs.
Wimmera River Improvement Committee member Gary Aitken of Horsham said the grant had "recharged their batteries".
The very active group plans to use the money for additional green picnic spots along the river.
WSMD supports and encourages sustainable development across five municipalities: Horsham Rural City Council and the shires of Buloke, Northern Grampians, West Wimmera and Yarriambiack whilst working with governments, business and the community.
