WARRACKNABEAL Golf Club held the first round of the men’s golf championships on Saturday.
Twenty-nine men played in the days event with nine ladies also playing in their weekly stableford event.
The winner of the A Grade event on Saturday was Jake Jess (hcp 6) net 71, followed by Richie Bett (15) net 72.
Winner in the B Grade was Alan McLean (21) with a net 71 and runner-up being Kym Stepney (24) net 72.
Other good scores were Daniel Kearns and David Stewart, both with 73, followed by Dean Gunn and Nathan McLean on 74 each.
Ladies winner on the day was Corinne Heintze (20) with 35 stableford points. Runner-up being Mary Massey (27) with 35 points.
The mens second round of championships will be played tomorrow.
Nearest the pin second shot ninth hole was Jake Jess. On the fifth hole was no man and Sue Sanford, on the seventh hole was Daniel Kearns and Sue Sanford and on the 13th hole was Daniel Kearns and Karen Germano.
The leaders in the mens grades after the first round are:
A Grade: Jake Jess gross 77, Dean Gunn 81, Gary Krahe 85, Wayne Gove 87, Matt Richardson 88, Ross Laycock 89.
Intermediate: Richie Bett 87, Russell Schultz 87, Brenton Cheney 87, David Stewrt 88, Nathan Mclean 88, Daniel Kearns 88, Ash Purdue 91, Terry Sanders 92, David Kranz 110.
B Grade: Alan McLean 92, David Baxter 98, Dennis Murphy 98, John Barbetti 98, David Trippett 102.
C Grade: Kym Stepney 96, Brian Scott 101, Mick Marchment 103, Derek Picken 104, Stan Ryan 104, Darrell McKay 106, Brett Allott 107, John Peters 108, Jamie Weston 118.
Last week’s (not reported previously) Palace Hotel Meal Run which was rain affected was played amongst nine men. Of the nine starters only five continued on for the 18 holes.
I don’t believe there was any results but Daniel Kearns had 19 points on the front nine to be the leader and continued on the second nine holes scoring 18 having the best score over the 18 hole of 37 points. Next best was Kym Stepney with 35 points.
Thursday just gone was played by 13 men with Ash Purdue leading after nine holes with a great 21 points, following up with 18 points on the back nine with 18 points, a combined total of 39 points. Runner-up to Ash was Derek Picken with 36 points.
Nearest the pin seventh hole was Mick Cheney and on the 13th hole was David Baxter.

Parenting humour
A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired to his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.
His father said he’d make a deal with his son, “you bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your bible a little and get your hair cut. Then we’ll talk about the car”.
The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he’d settle for the offer, and they agreed on it.
After about six weeks his father said, “son, you’ve brought your grades up and I’ve observed that you have been studying your bible, but I’m disappointed you haven’t had your hair cut.”
The boy said, “you know Dad, I’ve been thinking about that and I’ve noticed in my studies of the bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair and there’s even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.”
“Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went? None had a car!”
