An early start to the Pennant Division One competition between Warracknabeal Golf Blue and Golf White was a blessing, as the weather started to heat up late in the morning.
Although the presence of some cloud cover helped to keep the temperature down, the older players were thankful of the 9am roll up.
Golf White were in control most of the day with line and length a highlight and being the stronger team, with more consistency across all three rinks. Golf White were the convincing winners 106 shots to the Blue 46 shots, and a healthy 16 points added on the ladder.
Warren Perris and Max Woodward were the skippers to have the closest score line, with Golf White winning 15 of the 25 ends played, but Golf Blue steadied over the last 13 ends to win eight of them and pick up 17 shots to Golf White 11 shots, for a nine shot defeat.
Eighteen shots to three down after 10 ends, and to lose by that margin was a good effort by that team. Jill Bibby was a late inclusion with some telling close bowls, and Rob (Hot Rod) Taylor is handling his Bowls Arm with more consistency now. He was celebrating his 81st Birthday.
Ken Taylor and Shaun Smith for the White’s were steady all game with Noel Keams bobbing up now and again.
Shirley Liersch was also a late inclusion in the Golf White team skippered by Mick Marchment, and both Shirley and leader Ian Bibby peppered the kitty frequently early in the game to be involved in the lead of 19 shots to five up after 14 ends.
Blue skipper Graeme White and his team struggled early, but rallied with some close bowls on occasions. Lorraine Penny led for Graeme and was a consistent performer, with the teams thirds, Graham Clayton and Dawn Walton getting some chalk in tight ends.
Skipper Mick played his best game for the season with some telling draw shots to take the game to a 34 to 16 shot win for the Whites, winning 15 ends.
Roger Perris, Wayne Gove, Graeme Clarke and Garry Bellis gave the Whites a good percentage boost with a convincing win over their opposition 42 shots to nine.
Roger remembered the defeat from the last meeting against the same team, and wasn’t interested in a repeat. John Barbetti was the benefactor, but was truly stiff on a number of occasions when things didn’t go the teams way. You need luck in the game as well and John didn’t get too much of that.
Leaders Joan Clarke and Bellis were close to the mark most of the morning with Clicker Clarke for the White’s proving a nuisance if Blue had the shot bowl.
Roy Liersch bowled well after receiving his Super Veterans Bowls Badge from President Graeme White at the lunch break, having turned 80 years old a short time ago, and showing no ill effects from his time on the bowling green. Congratulations Roy.
Wayne Gove cleaned things up when needed, playing third, while Mary Ginnane also bowled well with no luck. Skipper Perris had one of his best days with some top draw bowls and a few healthy upshots to gain the big winning margin. The White’s won 18 ends of the 25.
Round 13 tomorrow and Golf White are at home to Warracknabeal whilst Golf Blue travel to Rainbow. The final round sees both Golf teams play at home against Min/Rup for the Whites and Hopetoun for the Blues.
