The North Wimmera Bowls Association Pennant season for 2022/2023 has been finalised with Warracknabeal producing an overall team effort to win the Grand Final in Division One against Warrack Golf Bowls White at Murtoa on Saturday.
The townies were always in control, as after the first four ends across the three rinks, had a 19 to four shot lead, and were consistent right up to the afternoon break, being ahead by 27 shots.
At this stage Golf had only one rink that could hold the steadiness of the opposition, with Warren Perris, Russell Miller, Barry Holland and Sean Smith on a par with Rod Sinclair, Brian Taylor, Robyn Goodwin and Isobel Davison at 13 all.
Golf picked up a four on end 15, to go to a three shot lead, but this was short lived as Warracknabeal scored on the next two ends to be only one behind at 17 to 16.
The Golfers then dug deep to win the next six of the eight ends to play and a win for Golf at 26 shots to 20. Well done to the boys with a top finish for the season.
This was where the celebrations stopped as Warracknabeal seemed to be much better suited to the slower greens, with bowls in the head, plus confidence in their own ability to out bowl the opposition.
Mick Marchment, Terry Sanders, Dawn Walton and Ian Bibby were victims of a complete bowls outfit that showed the way for a big victory for Warracknabeal.
Leader Peter Anderson, second Dale Stronach, third Edna Anderson and now veteran skipper Graeme Shalders, were a perfect combination on the day to outplay the Golfers and win in convincing style 37 shots to 10.
Although Golf had bowls in the head on some occasions, it was not enough to stop the onslaught. Edna played a slashing game against her old club with beautiful draw shots, as did her skipper, to take the game away from golf, and give their supporters a positive assurance the final was theirs. The last two ends were not played.
Roger Perris, Wayne Gove, Graeme Clarke and Gary Bellis found themselves struggling also with their opposition jumping out of the blocks, and were nine shots to nil down after four ends.
Warracknabeal skipper Calvin Pendlebury was at his top with a great game, backed up by his teammates, Graeme Walder, Garry McLean and Garry Schultz, thus leading 20 shots to nine at lunch, and an overall win 31 shots to 18.
Total result and a back-to-back victory to Warracknabeal of 88 shots to Golf 54 shots, a 34 shot differential. Warracknabeal deserved the win, being the most consistent team across all rinks for a long time in the competition. Well done, and best of luck as you move to the next level.
Beulah celebrated well into the night with a popular win in Division Two against Min/Rup.
A top year for the Blues as all three teams, Division One, Division Two and Midweek topped their respective ladders for the season, and finished with a premiership in Div 2.
Murtoa ladies provided a lovely afternoon tea for the four teams who participated in the final, with the club green and surrounds in perfect condition for players and spectators. Well done Murtoa.
