Garage sale buzz in Jeparit
Jeparit’s community-wide garage sale delivered a strong turnout on Saturday, June 6, with organisers saying the event brought visitors from across the region and beyond into the town.
One of the organisers, Sharon Reilly, said the day exceeded expectations, despite a few planned garage sales not going ahead.
“We had a great day,” she said.
“Every person that I went and saw and spoke to about it said they had a really good turnout and had a really good positive day with it.”
The event was promoted as a town-wide garage sale featuring six houses, antiques, collectables, tools, motorbikes, car parts, furniture, garden art, plants and other items.
The day also included the Wimmera-Mallee Pioneer Museum Book Fair, with maps and addresses available from Jeparit Supermarket.
Ms Reilly said around 70 maps were handed out, but many people had been driving around town without them since early in the morning.
“From 8 o’clock in the morning, it was just chaos in town,” she said.
She said the highlight was seeing so many people travelling through Jeparit and supporting local businesses.
“Just the amount of traffic and people through town, that was probably the best thing,” Ms Reilly said.
She said visitors came from a wide range of areas, including Stawell, Ararat, Geelong, South Australia, Warracknabeal, Rainbow and other neighbouring towns.
“There was just such a variety,” she said.
Ms Reilly said the event created a positive atmosphere, with many visitors also choosing to spend time at local businesses.
“A lot of the people were like, ‘No, we’re going to the milk bar, the cafe, and we’re going to have lunch in town and have a bit of a look around while we’re here,’” she said.
She said organisers had already received strong interest in holding the event again.
“Everyone’s already said, can we do it again next year?” Ms Reilly said.
“I think it’s going to be an annual event.”
Ms Reilly thanked everyone who supported the day, including those who opened their garage sales and those who travelled to Jeparit to attend.
“Just a huge thank you to everyone for their support,” she said.
“It was good to see Jeparit happening again.”
