Over 30 people attended the opening of the Vivienne McDermott exhibition “Strange Fruit” at Rainbow’s Turbo Gallery last Friday. They came from Warracknabeal, Ballarat, Melbourne, Horsham, as well as Rainbow and Yaapeet.
Speaking at the opening, Turbo Gallery director, Belinda Eckermann said she had met McDermott while the artist was visiting family in Warracknabeal and suggested she hold an exhibition at her gallery.
“I am so happy that she has gone along with that idea and we can view her colourful works which are bursting with energy,” Ms Eckermann said.
“It is great to see so many people here, some who have travelled a long way.”
McDermott spoke to the crowd about her art and the inspirations behind her pieces, and said her work expresses her thoughts and feelings as she walks through the bush.
“The colours in my works reflect where I live, close to Broome in Western Australia,” she said.
“They can take a couple of hours or a couple of weeks depending on how many layers I have to apply to complete each work. They are very intuitive with little preplanning.
“I am so excited to have my mother and other members of my family here this evening.”
