Frocks and 50s fashion find new home in Dimboola
When one chapter closes, another one begins, with That Little Vintage Store settling into the building previously known as Kath Porter's Emporium.
Owners Deb Howlett and Mark Gebgardt were renting retail spaces in South Australia and Tasmania, but dreamed of having a shop front they could call their own.
They looked in New South Wales and Queensland for available spaces, but said the end goal was always to find something in Dimboola.
Ms Howlett said they were drawn to Dimboola three years ago, after passing through the town and staying at the caravan park.
"I've always thought Dimboola was a quirky town and thought this was our tribe, we fit in here," Ms Howlett said.
"Everyone here have been very supportive."
The pair have already made a name for themselves in the vintage fashion industry because of their quality products.
"The shop is a destination," Ms Howlett said.
"People travel to see it."
Ms Howlett runs five Etsy shops, shipping to America and New Zealand as well as within Australia.
"We've shipped to L'Oreal head office in New York," Mr Gebgardt said.
Recently, they had hats and outfits feature in the new ABC series Ladies in Black.
Ms Howlett and Mr Gebgardt said the Lloyd Street shop would be like a vintage department store, stocking 1950s to 1970s fashion items such as American dresses, handbags and shoes.
"The mid-century modern items are our main focus," Ms Howlett said.
She said items were hand-picked "very carefully"
"We stock high-end goods that can be used in homes today," Ms Howlett said.
"We don't stock anything that I wouldn't have in my own home."
Renovations to the new store are well underway, including new timber flooring and a fresh coat of paint.
"We'll be repainting the outside in Victorian colours," Mr Gebgardt said.
"It's a great space, and I love the high ceilings," Ms Howlett said.
The store's opening date has not been set yet, due to the uncertainty that comes with renovating, but the couple said they hope to be trading by the end of the year.
