Fly high Little Joe
A Warracknabeal family have shared the sad news of the passing of their beloved Shetland pony, a well-known character around town, after Little Joe took his final breaths last Sunday.
Little Joe was born on September 1 2006 and purchased by Lyle Cook as a six month old colt.
He went to live with Lisa Thomas not long after when she fell in love with his cheeky nature, and became her best friend.
"He always looked for me and he would always do what was asked of him," Ms Thomas said.
Ms Thomas said little Joe was always first to the gate when he knew the sulkies were out, and would let the other horses get ahead of him before flying past, leaving them in his dust.
He was the leader of all the sulky trips, teaching many how to drive, and loved nothing more than socialising at family gatherings, sharing a beverage, and eating human food.
Little Joe was often seen at the local nursing homes, street parades, or enjoying a drink or two around town, and led the procession for Lyle Cook’s funeral last year.
He was well known on the local show circuit where he brought home many titles, including entry into the Victorian IMHR State Show, where he was crowned the Victorian State Supreme Champion Gelding.
Sadly, Little Joe was injured while playing in his field last weekend.
He was treated by the staff at Ballarat Vet Practice, where an x-ray revealed his leg had been irreparably broken.
Seventeen-year-old Little Joe passed away in the loving arms of his human family and has been buried on the family property where he will be remembered forever.
"He was my best mate and soulmate," Ms Thomas said.
“My little legend.”
