Excitement is mounting for this year’s Jeparit Easter Fishing Tournament, which will see anglers from all over the country descend on the town over the long weekend.
Volunteer, organiser and committee member Ben Zanker said they anticipate more contestants this year than last.
“Last year we had 400 anglers, but we are expecting around 500 this time,” he said.
“Our expectations are high, due to school holidays and the long weekend - we normally have 25 per cent locals and 75 per cent from outside.
“This Jeparit competition always attracts people from all over Australia - but mostly from Victoria and South Australia.”
Mr Zanker said the competition was vital to the town as the increase in visitors provided a boost to the town’s economy.
“It’s very important for Jeparit’s supermarket and pubs,” he said.
“With hundreds of people camped out near the river, the local economy will benefit.”
The competition takes place on Saturday April 8 from 7 am to 3 pm, and is strictly bank-fishing.
Entry for the junior category (under 16) will be $20, and for the senior category $30.
There are prizes up for grabs for heaviest carp and heaviest other fish, with the senior angler category’s top prize being $2000 cash, and $500 in cash for the junior angler category’s top prize.
Keen anglers can register online or at the Jeparit Anglers Club rooms, which they share with the Jeparit Golf Club on Lake Road.
Those that register online will need to attend the club rooms on the day to collect their rod tags.
