Fire leads to important lesson
Warracknabeal Fire Brigade responded to a small fire that broke out on the banks of Yarriambiack Creek along Craig Avenue, Warracknabeal, just after 3pm on Tuesday October 22.
Brigade captain Cameron Whelan said it appeared that someone had a small campfire the night before which hadn't been fully extinguished.
"With the wind and heat we had, it reignited and spread to the bark and leaves around it," he said.
The flames were quickly extinguished with the incident being marked safe at 3.20pm.
Mr Whelan said it was an example of how important it was for people to put out campfires, especially coming into fire restriction periods.
"People need to ensure it's extinguished totally before leaving," he said.
"Otherwise they can be charged."
People also need to ensure there is clearance between the campfire and other materials.
"This one didn't have a break of bare earth," Mr Whelan said.
Fire restrictions within the Yarriambiack Shire begin on October 28 and end on May 1 2025.
