Fenner's six help Demons tame Tigers
Laharum’s senior football side made it two wins from two on Saturday, April 18, defeating Pimpinio in round two of the Horsham District Football Netball League.
Playing at home, the Demons kicked 15.16 (106) to Pimpinio’s 10.4 (64).
Mackay Baker opened the scoring early for the Tigers, before both sides traded goals, with Laharum taking a 21-14 lead at quarter time.
Forwards Jack Fenner and Shan Argall capitalised on opportunities to extend the Demons’ lead to 49-26 at halftime.
Despite losing Argall at halftime, the Demons maintained control, extending their lead to 79-44 at the final break.
The Tigers continued to apply pressure on the home side, but Laharum ultimately prevailed by 45 points.
Laharum coach Robbie Miller admitted Pimpinio attacked the game strongly, and was proud of how his side reacted to the challenge.
“It was a competitive game for the entirety, right from the first siren to the final one,” he said.
“They (Pimpinio) never felt like they were going away.
“They continued to push hard, and we responded to the challenge quite well, so it was pleasing to get the win on our own ground.”
Fenner and Argall had strong games up forward, kicking six and three goals, respectively while midfielders Daniel Easson and Monty Wynne were particularly impactful throughout the game.
Cullen Williams led the Tigers with two goals, with Isaac Thomas, Dylan Thomas and back Daniel Baker among the best for the visitors.
While pleased with the win, the Laharum coach admits there was plenty for his team to improve on in the game.
“It was a good midfield battle,” Miller said.
“They probably got it on the exterior a bit too easily than what we were hoping for.
“We pride ourselves on winning that hardball and feeding it to our running players, so it was a battle.
“The pleasing thing is we're winning, but I think we've still got room for growth and improvement to play better football.
“There are a few areas that we've identified that we clearly need to work on; one of those was around the stoppage.
“We kind of fell into the trap of watching the game unfold in front of us rather than thinking about where we need to be positioning ourselves around each stoppage or off the contest.”
Miller added that the group is still learning to adjust to the new forward dynamic.
“Jack (Fenner) had another good game, kicking six, and he’s taking a lot more attention from the opposition defence, which gives other blokes a better chance,” he said.
“We've just got to be a bit more fluent with with our forward 50 entries and make the best decision rather than being so focused on Jack.
“We need to just look after our forwards a little bit better and I think the scoreboard will tick over itself if we can tidy that up.”
