Entrants flocking to poultry club's new venue
The Wimmera Poultry Club, with high expectations for its first show at the new Natimuk Showgrounds, anticipates a significant boost in the show's scale and quality due to the larger and more modern facilities.
Held at the Natimuk Showgrounds on Saturday, June 21, the show will feature some of the best bird and waterfowl exhibitors from Victoria and interstate competing for trophies and bragging rights.
Club president Brendan Lloyd said he was rapt with the phenomenal response to Saturday's show.
"We've sold out," he said.
"Usually, we'd see all the entries come in a few days before the show; however, we had to stop accepting entries already because we're full.
"I can't believe we've filled the shed."
Mr Lloyd said that while the countless hours of hard work by committee members and volunteers were difficult, the community's overwhelming support had made it all worthwhile.
"It's been a two-year process to get the shed to where it is now," he said.
"We've had to build cages and install custom lighting in the new shed."
Former club president Peter Hicks and NSW's Stephen Legge will be judging the various classes throughout the day, while many of the sponsors will present trophies to the winning entrants.
"Laucke Mills has jumped on board as our major sponsor," Mr Lloyd said.
"They'll also have a stand and have provided a lot of prizes for our winners.
"We've also got DMD, D&K Gardening, Scruff Muttz, Fair Dinkum Fauna, Your Family Vet, Roy and Joy Wood, Andy Flett, Belgian Bantam Club of Australia and the Silkie Club of Western Australia on board."
The club president said the show, which takes place alongside Natimuk United home game, has already brought economic benefits to the region.
"We have at least 20 entrants from South Australia and NSW," he said.
"They've all booked for dinner at the Nati pub on Friday night. They're all staying in town overnight and bringing money to the region."
