Easter brings a big week in golf

FIVE days of golf commencing with the Royal Mail Hotel Meal Run last Thursday led into the four day Easter events held at the Warracknabeal Golf course.

Good Friday was an event for both men and women playing stableford. 15 men and nine ladies competed in the event sponsored by Warrack Home Timber & Hardware.
Ryan McKenzie continued his excellent run of good scores winning the event with 38 stableford points followed by Ben Cumming (from Portland) with 33 points and Ryan Smith third with 32 points.
Other good scores were Ash Purdue and Dean Gunn with 31 points each.
The ladies event was won by Maree Heenan with 31 points on a countback from Charmaine Wilson. The next best score was Leanne Taylor with 29 points.
Nearest the pin fifth hole was no man and Beth Preston for the ladies, while on the seventh was Ben Cumming and Shirley Liersch. On the 13th hole, Ryan McKenzie and Lucy Cumming were closest.
Royal Mail Hotel Easter Saturday was played by 18 men only (no ladies). Brenton Cheney won the stableford event held on the day with 34 points with Ciaran Conoughton (from Geelong) being runner-up on 33 points, winning second prize from Dennis Murphy on a countback (also with 33 points).
Other good scores collecting a prize were John Barbetti with 32 points. Visitors came from Melbourne Airport, Geelong and Portland.
No men on the fifth green with Anthony McKenzie being closest on the seventh and Jack Wilson on the 13th.
Sunday’s event was sponsored by Emmett Motors with 17 men and four ladies playing a stableford event. Visitors came from Edenhope, Portland and Melbourne.
Mens winner was Ciaron Conoughton with a great 41 points, followed by Harrison Sealey on 36 points.
Barb Bibby won the ladies with 29 points with runner-up being Marilyn Garner with 26 points (both from Portland).
In the mens, Daniel Kearns also had a good score of 34 points and in the ladies Lucy Cumming received a third prize with 25 points. Ryan Smith, Ash Purdue, Gary Kennedy had scores of 34 points each.
A special prize went to Ann Mackintosh. An eagle on the eighth hole by Ciaron was also an achievement which gained him a trophy.
Nearest the pin seventh hole was Ryan Smith, on the 13th was Daniel Kearns.
And finally, we got to Easter Monday with a fourball best ball event sponsored by Ray Drummond Golf. 18 men and eight ladies played in again cool conditions but on an excellent golf course.
Visitors came from Portland, St Arnaud, Rainbow, Wallup and Donald. The winners with an excellent score of 46 points were Wendy Hewitt and Ash Purdue.
Having played in the same group as the winners who had 21 points on the front nine and 25 points on the back nine, it was a pleasure to witness some great golf shots. Well deserved winners.
Runners up were Dennis Murphy and Richie Bett with 45 points and Kym Stepney and Jamie Weston with 44 points. All great scores in a tight contest.
Nearest the pin seventh hole was Richie Bett and Barb Bibby, while on the 13th was M. Mulla and Wendy Hewitt.
A big thank you to all that played over the day’s events and for all those that helped in any way, whether it be supplying goods or helping in the office. Every bit helps, so thank you again.
Also two families from Portland that camped at the golf course for five nights and played every day except Saturday when they went to the races, thank you for being here again (as they come here every year). Those being Steve and Marilyn Garner and Tom and Barb Bibby, we hope you enjoyed your time here.
