Eagles down Ararat in tight win
The win couldn't have been any closer for Warrack on Saturday in A Grade netball, defeating their Ararat opposition by a goal.
The home side and Ararat were level after the first quarter, each having scored 12 goals, before the Eagles were down 24 to 25 at halftime.
They steadied in the quarter after the big break, taking a one-goal lead into the final quarter.
The Eagles were able to maintain that margin when it mattered to, at the final whistle, win 49 to 48.
Ararat drew level with the home side on numerous occasions, including with less than a minute remaining, but the steady shooting of Briodi McKenzie gave the Eagles the victory.
McKenzie finished the game with 12 goals, while Lauren Clyne did the bulk of the scoring for Warrack with 28 and Nicola Clyne had nine.
Ararat opted to use only a couple of shooters, in Laney McLoughlan (29 goals) and Maggie Astbury (19).
Coach of the Eagles, Sarah Spicer, admitted her heart rate was well and truly up during the contest on Saturday.
"It was an exciting game," she reflected.
"I was really happy with the girls' composure, especially in the last quarter and how they played four even quarters from all nine players.
"That's something we've been focusing on."
A goal up heading into the final quarter, Spicer said she had the confidence and faith her side could get the win.
"We had plenty of the ball," she said.
"It was definitely a shoot-out - both goal ends shot really well, especially under pressure."
The coach said Clyne had a big impact on the game for the Eagles in Goal Attack, shooting a lot of goals from distance.
"She was well supported by Briodi (McKenzie) and Nicola (Clyne), both playing Goal Shooter throughout the game.
"Jess Kelly was also solid for four quarters and gained pivotal turnovers for us.
"It was definitely a team effort, though."
Warrack will this week enjoy a bye as they prepare for their hitout against Horsham on May 23.
