For Madeline Mueller, her first day of school was a double celebration - it coincided with her fifth birthday.
She is enrolled at Horsham's Holy Trinity Lutheran College, and she was thrilled to take part in one of her favourite subjects straight away.
"My favourite class on my first day was arts," she said. "Drawing a gingerbread man on the paper made me joyful.
"Later I added colour to it. It was looking very cute. I'm glad I started school on my birthday."
One of Madeline's fellow foundation-year students, Edward Woods, said he enjoyed playing on his first day.
"The best part of the day was the sports activity," he said.
"I played in the basketball court with my new friends and really loved it."
Another foundation-year student, Hamish McDonald, said: "I'm excited to start school and feel great."
Year 2 student Thenuka Dissanayake said he was looking forward to playing with his classmates again.
"I'm overjoyed to be back at school," he said.
"I've been looking forwards to this day since the vacation, when I can play cricket with my friends again."
