Dimboola Lions puts money back into local community
Dimboola Lions Club has proudly put money made from the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) back into the Hindmarsh Shire community after they presented five community groups with grants at the Tower Park Market on Saturday November 9.
Residents across the Hindmarsh Shire returned over 1.4 million eligible drink containers over the last 12 months, resulting in over $140,000 going back into the pockets of community groups across the shire.
Gerang Gerung Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre received $657.03 for macropod food for the next 12 months.
Dimboola Sporting Club was awarded $5,200 for improving their recycling program with new infrastructure. This includes a fence with gates to lock up all rubbish bins, recycled can bins, recycled cardboard, and a caged trailer to be used only for recycling.
The Sidney Nolan Studio received $1,000 for the renewal for the building façade.
Dimboola RSL has received $800 for a heavy duty stick vacuum cleaner and the Dimboola Girl Guides received $4,400 to help replace the kitchen roof at the Arura Girl Guide Camp.
"The Dimboola Lions members are pleased that we are able to provide these grants to the community, which we could not do without the income from hosting the CDS reverse vending machine and the work of a dedicated group of volunteers who look after it," Dimboola Lions Club president Rod McKenze said.
Victorians have wholeheartedly embraced the scheme since it launched on November 1, 2023, and have returned 1 billion containers.
Close to $100 million has gone back into communities, including more than $950,000 through a variety of donation partners that have gone to charities and community groups.
