It was an excellent day for the Horsham Football Club on Saturday with the Under 14’s and Under 17’s winning their respective Grand Finals against the Horsham Saints at Dimboola Recreation Reserve.
The Under 14’s were dominant all year reaching the Grand Final with only 55 points scored against them and in the Grand Final only allowed 6 points in the 11.13.79 to 1.0.6 victory.
Fresh off winning the League Best and Fairest, 14 year-old Oakley Farr was awarded best on ground in a dominant midfield display. He provided run and brought his team-mates into play and was instrumental through the midfield.
At full forward league leading goal-kicker Chaz Smith kicked four goals. Dylan Seymour, whom usually plays Centre Half Back, was given a free role playing through the midfield and up forward and he shone winning contested football.
Arlo Pope was strong across half back in the ruck and had his best game of the year whilst Lincoln Tucker was influential on the wing kicking an important goal in the first quarter whilst Jude Mibus was brilliant up forward.
The Saints only goal kicker was Hugh Miller with LJ Kafegellis, Luke Miller, Frazer Shurdington, Bodey Wilde, Lachlan North and Levi Clarke among their best players.
It was Stuart Farr’s first year coaching a junior team and he was thrilled with the win.
“I didn’t know what to expect this year having coached juniors for the first time. I loved every minute of it. I am thrilled for the boys. They worked hard all year and are a good bunch of kids to teach.” Farr said.
“They play a selfless brand of football and the emphasis this year was being a good team mate and playing as a team.”
“They are close off the field and do a lot of social activities together. After the win, the next day they were on the golfing range together and it was satisfying seeing them enjoy themselves.”
Farr said they deserve the win through their hard work throughout the year.
“The amount they listen and willingness to learn has blown me away. They live off every word I say and you can see the enthusiasm each week,” he said.
“I saw a lot of rapid development this year and they are so professional the way they go about it.”
“I feel attached to them and taught them as much as I could and they drew from that and thoroughly deserve the win,” he concluded.
The Horsham Under 17’s were equally as dominant this year going through the year undefeated.
They got out of the blocks fast kicking 5 goals in the first quarter holding the Saints scoreless for the quarter. In the second quarter the Saints outscored them kicking 3 goals to trail by 19 points at half time.
Another 3 goal quarter from the Saints in the third saw them trail by 13 points at the last break and there was belief they could win.
The Demons controlled the ball and had all the play early in the last quarter kicking the first four scores of the quarter and extended the lead out to 21 points. The Saints fought back with the last two goals but it wasn’t enough with the Demons winning by 11 points; 9.9.63 to 8.4.52.
Jack Henry kicked a game-high 4 goals for the Saints whilst Lachlan Hobbs and Sam Potter kicked 3 a-piece for the Demons.
Sam Janetzki was named best on ground with Archie Elliott, Max Bunworth, Jeremy Kemp and Monty Wynne were also among the best players on the day.
