DIMBOOLA A Grade netball’s defiant run to Wimmera netball grand final has come to an end after being eliminated from the finals race on Sunday.
The Roos were defeated by Horsham in Sunday’s preliminary final at Nhill to bring to an end a strong run through the final series and finish the third ranked team of the competition.
Sunday’s final started well for the Roos as they matched strides with the Demons in the opening term and trailed by just one goal at quarter time, 12-11, as both teams sized each other up in a tense opening.
The Demons, however, stepped up their scoring rate in the second term and applied strong pressure through the midcourt to limit the Roos’ influence going forward and put a squeeze on scoring.
18 goals to seven was the result of the second term as Demons goalies Georgia Batson and Imogen Worthy found their range to finish off work from midcourt team-mates.
Roos shooter Olivia Jorgensen provided a strong avenue to goal as Holly Ross and Hannah Dubois teamed well to match strides with their Demons counterparts but the Demons were on song and continued their powerful scoring rate in the second half.
A further 16 goals to 10 saw the Demons lead 46-28 at three quarter time before going on with the job in the final term when they added 15 goals to the Roos 11.
The scoring power of Batson and Worthy saw the shooters finish with 32 and 29 goals respectively as Casey Rentsch and Georgie Carberry teamed well to produce strong games.
Jorgensen maintained a strong scoring rate throughout the match to finish with a game-high 37 goals as Ross and Dubois worked hard to the final whistle.
The Roos will now watch on as Horsham Saints and Horsham do battle for premiership honours on the Roos home court at the Recreation Reserve.
