November 11 each year is Remembrance Day for the Commonwealth nations which participated in World War I and their allies since the declaration of the armistice to end all hostilities of that war.
This has been the tradition at 1100 hours/11am on the 11th day of the 11th month each year since 1918.
Following the end of World War II, November 11 became an all-embracing time of remembrance for all conflicts and peace-keeping operations.
[CROSSHEAD]The red poppy: symbol of sacrifice, loyalty, loss
The once-churned battlefields of The Great War (WWI) became fields of red poppies, resembling the bloodshed from the carnage of war.
The disturbed fertile fields of Flanders, northern France and Belgium sprang with new life - a “carpet” of vivid red, a poignant reminder of man’s horrendous loss of life for the cause of justice, right and liberty.
[CROSSHEAD]The Poppy Appeal
This appeal is conducted each year by the Returned Services League (RSL) to raise funds for ex-service personnel welfare causes.
Since 1921 the wearing of various poppy badges has been a tribute to the sacrifice, service and suffering of the men and women who have been volunteers in all theatres or war.
RSL Dimboola will be selling poppies outside the Dimboola IGA Store on Thursday November 9 and Friday November 10, from 10 am to 4pm.
Poppies will also be on sale at the Bendigo Bank.
A Remembrance Day Commemoration Service will be conducted on Saturday November 11 at 10.30am in the forecourt of the RSL Hall, 113 Lloyd Street, Dimboola.
