Daffodil Day to fund life-saving research
With more than 100 people across the Wimmera diagnosed with cancer in 2022, chances are most people have been touched by the disease in one way or another.
This August, Cancer Council Victoria is urging Victorians to dig deep for Daffodil Day on Thursday August 22 to fund life-saving research.
The compassion and dedication of donors and supporters has helped secure a $130 million investment in research over the past five years, Cancer Council Victoria head of fundraising and communications Lyrian Fleming-Parsley said.
“With almost one in two people heartbreakingly impacted by cancer during their lifetime, it is essential we continue to invest in life-saving cancer research,” Ms Fleming-Parsley said.
“For all cancer takes, we encourage everyone to give all they can this Daffodil Day.”
More than $410,000 was raised through community fundraising, daffodil sales, donations and events in 2023.
Thirty-two Victorians die from cancer every day, but Ms Fleming-Parsley said breakthroughs in prevention, screening and treatment had helped improve survival rates.
The five-year survival rate has decreased by 48 per cent over the past 30 years, however cancer is still the leading cause of death in the state.
