Wimmera-Mallee Cricket Association recognised individuals performances throughout the season after Saturday’s grand finals.
A and B Grade players were recognised for their achievements throughout the season with Birchip cricketer Jonty Randall taking out the prestigious a Grade Darky Dunstan Champion Player award, while Southern Mallee Giants captain Jack Flavel was recognised winning the Perc Beasely Champion Player award while also taking out the batting aggregate award.
A highlight of the presentations was two life memberships presented by association president Ben Duxson to Daryl Broughton and Robin Letts.
These two men are well known through cricket ranks, particularly through the former Tyrell competition and were recognised for years of service.
“Toot” Broughton is a former ANA player, known as a big hitter who was once part of a partnership, exceeding 300 runs, of which he scored roughly 275.
He is one of the very few people known to have landed a ball in the river, from Goff Letts Oval (Donald football ground).
Association secretary Jason Smith paid tribute to the two recipients, recognising their contributions,
“Toot has been umpiring for the entirety of the Wimmera Mallee Cricket Association existence, and for the vast majority of that time, has clearly been universally considered our best umpire.
“This year, he also jumped on board as one of three selectors in our senior representative program.” he said.
Letts is well known for this contribution through the media and Buloke Times.
A former player, Letts has been in the cricket scene for most of his life and has followed the game through the former competiton and Wimmera-Mallee competitionm.
“We all know about his passion, we all know about his love for the game, the association, and his community.
“Well into his 90s, Robin still gets out and amongst the play each week, often found right in the ring chasing the best possible shot. We are still trying to work out how, after all these years, he has never been hit with a ball,” Smith said.
