Council agree to fly more flags
A revised flag control policy was adopted by council during their July meeting, allowing for two additional flags to be flown at the Warracknabeal municipal office on Lyle Street.
The change comes following a 2022 council forum where a request was made to be allowed to fly the Yarriambiack Shire Council flag, and the Rainbow Pride flag on significant days.
A fourth flagpole was installed outside the building last year to accommodate the new flags, while still allowing the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander flags will be flown as usual.
The Yarriambiack Shire Council will now be flown when councillors are sitting, and the Rainbow Pride flag will be flown on IDAHoBIT Day (May 17) and International LGBT Pride Day (June 28).
Cr Tom Hamilton, who moved the motion to amend the flag policy, said it was good to see the fourth flag pole installed, and how important it was to the community.
"It gives us the opportunity to fly different flags at different times," he said.
The implementation of the new flag control policy provides clear guidelines on the principles and intentions behind flying flags, ensures flag protocols are followed, and encourages respect for the flags and their meanings.
The policy is reviewed every three years.
