Completion date for leisure centre works set back

The completion date of the Warracknabeal Leisure Centre project has been extended to March 3, 2025 after Yarriambiack Shire Council was informed by their insurer of delays.

By Caitlin Menadue

The initial completion date was set for before Christmas this year.

Council CEO Tammy Smith said the delays are due to engineering specifications requiring deeper excavation for the footings than originally anticipated.

"This has extended the duration of the works and increased the volume of soil to be moved," she said.

Ms Smith said council apologises for the inconvenience and disruption the extended delay will cause.

“This is obviously extremely frustrating for all parties involved," she said.

"Well over $100,000 was recently invested into the basketball facilities and we would like nothing more than to see it utilised and enjoyed by our community."

The Warracknabeal Leisure Centre is expected to remain closed while extensive works are undertaken to repair damage caused by a broken underfloor water pipe in the canteen.

As a part of an approved insurance claim, repair works will include the replacement of damaged footings, the removal and replacement of well over 500m2 of timber flooring, various plasterwork, painting and new floor coverings.

The contractor has advised that they are continuing excavations and looking to start pouring some of the footings later next week and to pour the concrete in stages to try to compress the remaining schedule.
