Competition success the icing on the cake for Horsham Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Horsham Brazilian Jiu Jitsu celebrates competition success.
Six students from Horsham Brazilian Jiu Jitsu have claimed gold at the 2024 Will-Machado AUS/NZ Championships, an event labelled 'The Gathering.'
The event, held on Saturday, September 7, at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre also saw Horsham's 14 competing athletes claim also claim three silver medals, and one bronze.
Horsham Brazilian Jiu Jitsu owner and coach Jesse Millar said he was incredibly happy to see his students success in the competition.
"That's always the goal as a coach, to see your students succeed," he said.
"Just the act of actually putting themselves out there and having a go in a high pressure situation like a competition is excellent too, so some students coming away with some silverware is just the icing on the cake."
Millar said for some of his students, this competition is a reward for 'months and months of hard work' and many have put in additional work to prepare.
"We've got students that have trained for varying amounts of time, for some of them, it's under 12 months, some students have been training for several years," he said.
"Certainly in the lead up to an event like that, there's some extra work that gets involved.
"On top a few nights a week they already train, we do some Saturday sessions which are competition based training ... its a lot more high intensity than the normal training.
"We do a lot of work in the gym as well, strength and conditioning, and those sorts of things, outside of what we actually do with our specific training with Jiu Jitsu."

"Obviously it is very physical ... but you don't necessarily have to come in with any base level of fitness, that can be built up over time through training with us," he said.
