Communities show support for UN campaign
Communities around the Hindmarsh Shire banded together, as they participated in Walk and Walk events to support United Nations '16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence' campaign.
In Rainbow, around 15 people participated in the walk, which started at the Turbo Gallery located on Federal Street and finished at Rainbow Skate Park on Tuesday December 2.
Attendees were asked to wear orange to show their support for the cause and many honoured the request.
Event attendees were treated to a barbeque dinner cooked by the Rainbow Lions Club after the walk.
Jeparit also hosted the walk where participants walked from Menzies Square to the Riverbank Precinct on Wednesday December 3.
The international campaign takes place from November 25, until December 10, each year and aims to unite communities and call for the elimination of gendered violence.
Across all events held in Nhill, Dimboola, Rainbow and Jeparit over 175 people participated and showed their support.
“As a community, we must stand together to raise awareness and take action against gender-based violence," Hindmarsh Shire Council mayor Ron Ismay said.
"It was heartening to see so many come together, walking through our streets, wearing orange, and showing their commitment to a future free from violence."
“I am proud of the collective efforts of our community, and I think everyone who participated in these walks, as well as the local groups that supported us."
