Cold reality hits region: Winter appeal supports vulnerable locals
WHILE many of us will retreat to our warm homes this winter, countless people in our region will face the dangerous reality of homelessness. Navigating the maze of essential support and housing can feel terrifying.
For people already struggling to survive, finding where to turn for support can be exhausting and confronting.
According to Katrina, who leads the Uniting Vic.Tas divisions for mental health, alcohol and drugs, homelessness, and youth, something as small as a warm coat could have a life-changing impact.
“A decent coat can make a big difference,” she said.
Uniting is calling on the community to support vulnerable locals this season by donating non-perishable food and warm winter clothing like coats and socks.
Kim, the homelessness entry-point worker at Uniting Horsham, has seen a greater demand for support during these recent trying times.
“Sometimes people need to choose between paying their rent or electricity bill or buying some decent food for the family,” she said.
“We are their go-to resource for assistance in those areas.”
For those sleeping rough, survival essentials like emergency food parcels and sleeping bags provide immediate relief.
Community leaders like Katrina emphasise the importance of human connection, urging anyone struggling not to face hardship alone but to reach out for help.
“It's important not to stereotype or guess what someone is going through, as these are challenging times for many," she said.
“That’s why we encourage people who have those challenges to seek support.”
As the only field worker in the region, Glenn works on the front lines to supply emergency items, listen to individuals’ struggles, and build trust to connect them to stable accommodation.
He wanted to break down societal stigma, reminding the public that homelessness has no single “look” and often links to complex challenges like lack of affordable housing or domestic violence.
“Homelessness is getting worse, and it’s becoming more visible,” Glenn said.
“I’m just asking the community not to be judgmental if they can.
“We don’t know what trauma our clients have been through, and we don’t know their stories.”
