Despite a small crowd in attendance on Saturday night, the Southern Mallee Giants managed to pull off another extremely successful Goods & Services Auction, raising $77,000.
Having adopted the online platform Galabid since the pandemic wreaked havoc on the standard in-person format a few years ago, the Giants have continued to utilise the virtual system to ensure those that were unable to attend, or who support the Giants from afar, didn’t miss out on the fantastic items up for grabs.
With items ranging from mystery hampers of food, wine and toys, to big ticket items like corporate box tickets for this season's AFL Grand Final, and plenty of farming items including gravel, freight services and plant hire, there was sure to be something for everyone.
The decision was also made to withhold a few items from the online auction to put under the hammer for those present in the clubrooms for a bit of extra fun, and it’s safe to say that those who stuck around were rewarded, not only with some fantastic items, but also plenty of laughs.
Auctioneers Josh Warren and Rupert Sangster had everyone in stitches and tried every trick in the book to pull a few extra dollars from the wallets of those looking on, adding a further $10,000 to the online tally.
A signed 2023 Sydney Swans guernsey fetched $1500, while a night of meals and drinks at the Bull & Mouth Hotel in Horsham went for $2200.
Socks were sold for over $100, hampers worth $30 quintupled in price, but it was all part of what makes the Auction one of the community's favourite events on the calendar.
A total of 99 people registered to bid online, with 627 online bids being placed.
While many items went for above RRP, the auction was conducted in the usual brilliant Giants spirit, where every purchase is considered more of a donation.
President Nathan Williams took to the microphone at the completion of the auction to thank all of the generous donors who make have made the auction such a success, year after year.
He also thanked the donors who continue to support the club;s more important night of the year, and the administration team who pulled it all together.
"We are all very happy with the result," he said.
