Warracknabeal residents have set up an honorary window display on Scott Street to give the town a glimpse into the history of Anzac Park.
Anzac Park celebrates its centenary this year and the Warracknabeal Football Club are planning a celebratory event to coincide with their second match of the season on April 22.
The window display, next to the Commonwealth Bank encompasses the meaning behind the change in name from Werrigar Park to Anzac Park in 1923 - the brave Warracknabeal soldiers, many of whom were local footy players, who went to war.
Anzac Park Centenary project manager Paul Atkin, his wife Hannah, and Warracknabeal historian Graeme Massey set up the window display, which includes Australian Army uniform worn during World War I, supplied by the Warracknabeal Returned and Services League (RSL).
Warrack Eagles football brothers Chris and Peter Roche contributed to the display with pieces of their own Australian Army uniform, boots and hats.
The shining Melba Cup is also on display which, following a vote by Warracknabeal residents in 1923, was awarded to wing Ern “Snipe” Cooper following the club’s premiership win.
Curious eyes will spot the brand-new club jumper, created specifically for the Anzac Park Centenary, which will be available for purchase following the April 22 celebration.
The informational sheets among the treasures record the success of the Warracknabeal Football Club in 1923, when they won all but two games and took home the premiership.
