Calendar filling up fast

THERE’S no time to waste getting into 2026 for the Dimboola Lions Club, with holidays winding up, and planning and expectations for the year already well underway.

As a halfway point between Melbourne and Adelaide along the Western Highway, the Dimboola (and Nhill) Lions Club-run Driver Reviver at Lochiel gets many people getting an important rest stop.

Minutes secretary, La Vergne Lehmann, said they were pleased with another year of the Lochiel Driver Reviver program, with the well-established community service north-west of town helping make travel plans safer over the Christmas/New Year holidays by encouraging drivers to “have that proper break”.

“It’s always busy over the summer period and obviously with a bit of hot weather, a bit challenging for our volunteers as well,” she said.

“So we manage those hot days and don't open in the afternoons.

“We've had a good number of people come through. We've been doing it for over 30 years and ... we get people taking photographs of the little building that we've got there, and sending them to the kids, saying, ‘Do you remember doing this 20 years ago when we stopped here?’"

La Vergne said the club had also recently got its cardboard compactor working again.

With the container deposit scheme machine, community BBQs and other ongoing activities, she said the club would love to hear from volunteers willing to jump in for a few hours to lend a hand.

She also said the Good Friday Appeal work would be “kicking off pretty soon” and was generally looking forward to a calendar full of events throughout 2026.

With that in mind, they had wanted to compile a combined informal Dimboola calendar (below), obviously to promote the wide range of happenings coming up, but also to help locals schedule yet-to-be-confirmed events with a view to minimising unnecessary clashes.

In reference to regular events, wearing her other hat as Tower Park Committee president, she said their second meeting recently held had decided to “morph” the market into the Dimboola Fun Fest, with each one having a theme.

“The first one will kick off in March, and that'll be the second Saturday ... that will have a circus theme,” La Vergne said.

With family-friendly activities, traders offering special deals, Dimboola Dollars, music, picnic days and much more, the Fun Fest would be a natural extension of the five markets held in 2025.

The concept was to value-add to the market with a series of activities that help to create a drawcard to bring day-tripper visitors to Dimboola and engage more of the local community in homegrown activities.

The calendar was correct at the time of printing, but La Vergne said the Lions Club will periodically update the calendar as months roll past, as they are made aware of new events and any new details and/or changes to existing ones, so check on their Facebook page regularly.
