Cake Bake raises $1000+
Hopetoun Red Cross has turned cupcakes into a four-figure fundraising result, raising more than $1,000 at its Big Cake Bake for March Red Cross Calling.
The group held the event at the Neighbourhood House on February 26, choosing a one-off cake stall instead of its usual street collections.
Hopetoun Red Cross president Val Carra said the branch made the change after discussing it at a meeting and looking for a simpler way to raise more funds.
“We decided at our last Red Cross meeting that we would do the cake bake for Red Cross calling,” Ms Carra said.
“We usually sit up the street and take donations, but we felt that we probably would get more money by doing this.”
The community responded strongly, with locals buying homemade cakes to eat on the day or take home.
“We certainly did, and we doubled our money,” Ms Carra said.
The branch raised over a $1000,” she said, adding the total would go directly to the Red Cross Calling appeal.
“It goes straight to headquarters for Red Cross calling,” Ms Carra said.
Ms Carra thanked residents for backing the fundraiser and supporting a major national appeal from a small country town.
"We thank the public who came and enjoyed a cake or took some home,” she said.
The Hopetoun Red Cross branch is returning to regular meetings and preparing for upcoming zone gatherings, starting with a meeting in Charlton.
